This is something of a Christmas treat for the Toon Army: a rare home game for them to enjoy on Boxing Day.
They certainly have been enjoying the football served up by Alan Pardew's side over the last couple of months. Since October, Newcastle have won six of their eight matches to soar up the table. Once concerned about being on the fringes of the relegation battle, talk is now of Europe - and not necessarily another crack at the Europa League.While others debate which of the Merseyside clubs might qualify for the Champions League, few consider Newcastle. And that's probably the way the Geordies like it. Pardew has done a magnificent job in remobilising his squad into an exciting, efficient unit. Once again his Frenchmen are to the fore, with the flair of Yohan Cabaye, the energy of Moussa Sissoko and the goals of Yoan Gouffran to name but three.
But it's not just a Gallic tale. Don't underestimate the industry of Cheick Tiote and Vernon Anita, the class of Fabricio Coloccini and goalkeeper Tim Krul.
With Arsenal visiting St James' on Sunday, the temptation will be to consider Stoke as easier opponents. That could be dangerous because, like Newcastle, the Potters have hit a rich seam of form with recent impressive victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Mark Hughes insisted through the dark days of September and October that his team would get better and so it's proved.
Their four-game unbeaten run is their best for over a year. Charged with taking Stoke on to another level, the Welshman is currently on course to do just that. They're 10th in the table and under Tony Pulis they never finished in the top half.
Securing a rare win at Newcastle would strengthen their case considerably.

Head-to-head
Stoke have won just once at St James' Park in all competitions since 1976 - a 2-1 victory in 2010.
Newcastle have won three of their last four matches against Stoke, including a dramatic last-minute 2-1 victory at St James' Park last March.
Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse have both scored three goals in their last three league appearances against Stoke, while Jon Walters has scored in four of his last five Premier League appearances against Newcastle.

They have lost just one of their last eight league matches (W6, D1, L1).
The Magpies have scored in 14 of their last 15 league games.
It will be a year to the day on Boxing Day that an English player last scored a league goal for Newcastle United (James Perch against Manchester United).
They have lost six of their last seven Premier League matches played on 26 December - although this is only their second home game in the last 12 seasons to be played on Boxing Day.
A win in this fixture would be their 200th victory at home in the Premier League.

Stoke
This is Mark Hughes' longest unbeaten run as a Premier League manager since March 2011, when he was in charge of Fulham.
The Potters have lost only one of their last 16 league matches in December and are unbeaten in their last 12 since losing 3-0 at Manchester City on 21 December 2011.
Like Newcastle, they have lost just one of their last eight league matches (W3, D4, L1).
This is the third time in six seasons in the Premier League that they have had 21 points after 17 matches. Their lowest tally was 20 points, in 2008-09.

The lack of defensive options means Ince has his fingers crossed that Craig Cathcart passes a fitness test on his knee with loanee Bradley Orr still some five weeks away with a thigh problem.

Manchester City have named captain Vincent Kompany in the squad after a two-month absence with a thigh injury.
Belgium defender Kompany has missed the last 10 games in all competitions.
There's no doubt that since Manuel Pellegrini came to Manchester, he's made the Etihad Stadium home sweet home. Seven wins from seven so far and only two goals conceded is a hugely impressive record and City don't look like losing many, if any, at home.
The burning question with a third of the season gone is quite simply - can they get enough points on the road to be at the top of the table next May?
The evidence so far is concerning. Four defeats already isn't championship form. Just to put it in perspective, it took Roberto Mancini's side until 16 March last season to lose four in total.
I witnessed their first reverse this season when they squandered a lead at Cardiff and looked defensively vulnerable. They have been unfortunate at Villa and Sunderland. They haven't been helped by the absence of their influential captain Vincent Kompany and the fact that they have fielded seven different centre-back pairings already.
Psychologically they need an away win or it will begin to wear them down. Trips to West Brom and Southampton in the space of four days will be an interesting challenge. Further ahead, they still have to visit the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs and Everton.
West Brom have already proved they can match the big boys on their day this season, having beaten Manchester United and held both Arsenal and Chelsea. I watched them lose to a Moussa Sissoko wonder goal at Newcastle on Saturday, just their fourth defeat of the season.
They are difficult to beat but too often the draw specialists have been unable to close a game out. They have now won just seven league matches in 2013.
They will need little motivation for this one as they try and shut out the division's top scorers and beat City for the first time in five years. Pellegrini's men, though, cannot afford any more travel sickness.

All four of Manchester City's defeats have come away from home, equalling their tally on their travels for the whole of last season.
City are the division's top goalscorers, with 37 in 13 league games. Sergio Aguero (10) and Alvaro Negredo (6) have netted more between them than West Brom's entire league tally of 15.
Only eight of City's goals scored have come on their travels, while their points per game average on the road is less than one (0.66).
Manchester City are looking to win three successive Premier League games for the first time since mid-April.
Manuel Pellegrini's side have won five of six matches against top-half opposition, but have lost three of seven against sides in the bottom half.
Alvaro Negredo has scored eight goals in his last seven appearances for City in all competitions.

Mark Schwarzer was the hero of Fulham on Saturday after United goalkeeper Cottagers 95th minute a penalty of Mikel Arteta to keep the score at 3-3 after a thrilling match.

After leading the game with goals from Olivier Giroud first and Lukas Podolski, the game looked as good as over after only 25 minutes. The crosses and Fulham Gunners have not had a real hit on the target.

However, the party became the head on the half hour when Dimitar Berbatov gave the townspeople a lifeline with his fourth goal since joining from Manchester United.

As soon as his head hit the bottom Bulgarian network, trust Arsenal visibly exhausted. Not surprisingly, even after Fulham Berbatov teed up Alex Kacaniklic home fire.

With the second goal, the townspeople became the second Premier League scorers this season.

Sensing blood, Martin Jol has urged his team in the second period. Trembled like Arsenal and panic under pressure, adventurous team deserve far.

Intelligence Berbatov was at the front, dragging the Gunners back four sides, and Bryan Ruiz took the ball in the area, the challenge clumsy and lazy Mikel Arteta gave a penalty.

In such a situation, there is probably no better than Berbatov. Best player in the Premier League intensified Vito Mannone send the wrong way and put his team on the way to a historic victory.

Before Saturday, Arsenal have conceded fewer goals from the Premier League (only eight) and had never lost at home to Fulham at home in 26 games, and some 98 years.

With the game on the line, both sides went in search of a fourth goal elusive.

Neither goalkeeper had to intervene because the last 20 minutes until referee Phil Dowd, a bit controversial, Arsenal got a penalty in injury time.

Andrei Arshavin was introduced by Theo Walcott bored with just five minutes of play, and poor cross appeared to hit the hand of Chris Baird and not vice versa.

Mikel Arteta came to win the game for Arsenal, but his penalty was saved by Mark Schwarzer sensationally quit the game at 3-3.

This result holds for both parties in touch with the top four. However, any possibility that Arsenal had to mount a title challenge is indeed dead and buried.
